Fans Player of the Day - 7th

#RoadtoTokyo

Article Tue, Jan 7 2020

It may have been a match that did not matter a great deal in terms of qualification to Tokyo 2020, but sure did it matter to the players and none more so than Jolan Cox of the Red Dragons.  The statistics will make uncomfortable reading for his teammates as Jolan out scored all of his team mates in each of the point scoring departments.

More than enough reason to win the Fans Player of the Day vote on Twitter with 40.7% of the vote.

With regular team captain Sam Deroo and main setter Stijn D’Hulst resting, Jolan Cox linked well with Matthias Valkiers to hammer out a fantastic 41 points, including five aces.

To a non-Volleyballer, 41 may not seem like that many across a five set match.  But when you compare the numbers to Jolan's teammates, and the players from the Czech Republic it is truely remarkable.  For example the next highest scorer was Patrik Indra (CZE) with 28.  The next highest in Team Belgium had 12.

Then if you break down the 41 points, there were 2 blocks, then 5 aces off 22 serves and finally 34 spikes off 57 balls - only costing the team 6 points in the process (1 error and blocked 5 times.

Belgium finished the tournament on a 1-2 win-loss record out of contention for the semis.

"It was a really hard fought battle. It was a really long run but it is really nice to finish the tournament with a win."
